Project Titan's Ambitious Beginnings and Eventual Demise
From 2014 until its cancellation in early 2024, Apple Inc. embarked on a secretive and ambitious research and development effort known as "Project Titan", aiming to develop an electric and self-driving car. This endeavor reportedly consumed over a decade of work and more than $10 billion in investment. At its peak, around 5,000 employees were reportedly working on the project as of 2018.
Despite significant investment and talent acquisition from the automotive industry, Project Titan faced numerous challenges, including leadership changes and shifting objectives. Initial concepts for the "Apple Car" reportedly included a fully autonomous vehicle without a steering wheel or pedals, offering a luxurious, limousine-like interior. However, the complexities of car manufacturing and the immense supply chain challenges ultimately led Apple executives to cancel the project in February 2024, reassigning many of its employees to the company's burgeoning artificial intelligence efforts.
