The Meteoric Rise and Precipitous Fall of Situational Awareness
Situational Awareness, an AI-focused hedge fund, quickly became a prominent name on Wall Street, at one point managing over $30 billion in assets and leveraging hundreds of billions more to amplify its investments. Founded in 2024 by Leopold Aschenbrenner, a 24-year-old former OpenAI researcher, the fund achieved astronomical gains through concentrated bets on AI-linked stocks. However, its aggressive strategy, which saw protective put options largely disappear by June 2026, replaced by outright long positions, ultimately led to its undoing.
The fund's fortunes reversed dramatically in late July when AI stocks declined and traditional tech stocks, which Situational Awareness had shorted, rose. This market shift triggered a cascade of margin calls, forcing the fund into a "fire sale" liquidation. The majority of its public equity portfolio was sold at a roughly 10% discount to rival hedge fund Citadel in an emergency transaction. This rapid unraveling saw the fund's portfolio value plunge by an estimated 67% in July.
