British pensions and life insurance heavyweight Legal & General informed staff on Wednesday that it plans to eliminate roughly 1,000 roles by the middle of 2027, amounting to approximately 10 percent of its global workforce. [1]The move represents the most aggressive staffing reduction under chief executive António Simões since he took the helm in January 2024, escalating a sweeping restructuring campaign designed to strip corporate bureaucracy from the FTSE 100 group.
The redundancies will initially roll out as a voluntary severance programme across the firm's primary workforce base in the United Kingdom, where the majority of its roughly 10,000 employees are stationed. According to reporting first broken by Bloomberg News and subsequently confirmed by the company, Legal & General does not rule out shifting to compulsory cuts if the voluntary take-up fails to hit the 1,000-role target before the mid-2027 deadline.
