Apple is putting a hard ceiling on how much its workforce can spend on artificial intelligence tools each day, according to a report from Bloomberg. The iPhone maker recently reduced daily spending limits for select engineers from $300 to $200 per person, with internal plans under review to slash those caps down to $100 per day for certain engineering teams. Non-engineering staff, who previously operated under a $100 ceiling, may see daily allocations restricted to as little as $25[3].
The policy change applies directly to external large language model APIs that engineers utilize for software development, debugging, and data processing, including Claude by Anthropic, ChatGPT by OpenAI, and Gemini by Google. The restrictions mark an abrupt shift for Apple engineers, who have grown accustomed to generous API access to accelerate complex software workflows. Any employee requiring spending above the new threshold must now submit an explicit exemption request to senior leadership.
