The Social Security Administration announced Wednesday that monthly retirement and disability benefits will rise by 3.6 percent in 2027, lifting payouts for approximately 76 million Americans coping with persistent cost pressures. The adjustment, the largest annual increase since 2023, will raise the average monthly retirement check by about $75, taking typical payments from $2,095 to roughly $2,170[3].
The annual cost-of-living adjustment, widely known as COLA, affects nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries starting in January 2027. An additional 7.3 million recipients of Supplemental Security Income will receive their updated payments on December 31, 2026, because New Year's Day is a federal holiday. The announcement arrived on the heels of federal inflation figures that underscored ongoing strain across American households.
