A New Paradigm in AI Development: Learning Without Human Data
Ineffable Intelligence, a British AI lab founded by former DeepMind researcher David Silver, has secured an unprecedented $1.1 billion in seed funding, valuing the nascent company at $5.1 billion. This substantial investment marks a pivotal moment in the artificial intelligence landscape, as Silver aims to build an AI that learns and discovers knowledge entirely through its own experience, eschewing reliance on human-generated data.
Silver, a professor at University College London and a central figure in the development of DeepMind's groundbreaking AlphaGo, AlphaZero, and AlphaStar systems, departed Google DeepMind in late 2025 to pursue this ambitious vision. His new venture, incorporated in November 2025, has no product or revenue, but its thesis challenges the prevailing paradigm of AI development, which largely depends on large language models trained on vast datasets of human-generated information.
The "Superlearner" and Reinforcement Learning
At the core of Ineffable Intelligence's mission is the creation of a "superlearner" that can discover knowledge and skills autonomously through reinforcement learning. This technique enables AI to learn from interaction with its environment, through trial, error, and self-play, leading to the generation of strategies and insights that may be entirely novel to human understanding. Silver's previous work on AlphaZero, which mastered games like Go, Chess, and Shogi from scratch through pure self-play, serves as a testament to the power of this approach.
Ineffable Intelligence's website boldly states that if successful, this work could represent a scientific breakthrough comparable in magnitude to Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, by explaining and building all intelligence. This vision directly contrasts with the limitations Silver and co-author Richard Sutton outlined in a 2025 paper, arguing that large language models are fundamentally constrained by their reliance on existing human knowledge.
A Record-Breaking Investment and Strategic Backing
The $1.1 billion seed funding round is not only a testament to Silver's formidable track record but also stands as the largest seed round in European history. The round was co-led by prominent U.S. venture capital firms Sequoia Capital and Lightspeed Venture Partners, with significant participation from Nvidia, Google, and Index Ventures. The British government has also thrown its weight behind Ineffable Intelligence through its Sovereign AI Fund and the British Business Bank, investing $20 million to strengthen domestic AI capabilities.
This massive investment in a pre-product startup, based largely on the credibility of its founder and the tractability of its thesis, highlights a broader trend in the AI investment market. Elite researchers are increasingly leaving established tech giants to launch independent ventures, attracting billions in capital to pursue artificial general intelligence through radically different technical approaches. Silver has also pledged to donate all personal proceeds from Ineffable Intelligence to high-impact charities.
