Reddit will begin requiring visitors to log in to browse discussions on its platform, terminating a foundational open-web model that allowed unregistered web users to read forum threads for more than two decades. The decision follows a severe drop in organic search referrals driven by generative artificial intelligence features from search providers such as Google[3].
The company confirmed the pivot during its third-quarter 2026 earnings presentation, revealing that search engine referral visits declined by more than 1 million visitors per week on average in October. Facing an escalating threat from AI answer engines that synthesize user discussions without delivering click-through visits, Reddit Chief Executive Steve Huffman announced the platform will construct a walled garden to protect commercial data assets, comply with global regulations, and monetize signed-in accounts.
